Hello,

I'm a newbie and am looking for assistance in identifying a bottle. It is about 12"tall and has two faces--one happy and one fierce--about 4" tall, one on each side, along the bottom of the bottle. The next 5" inches are the hair and tapers to a clear top of about 3". The faces and hair have a satin finish while the top is clear.

Any help on what it is and its scarcity would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen 5 or 6 of these at bottle shows, I forget the details. I also believe this bottle was discussed here before back in 2010 if I'm not mistaken, I just don't know what to type into the search box to find the post...

this site will help with bottles in general, there's a section for finishes and closures (lips). A pic of the bottom may help. BTW I have you by a year diving[:D]

He's called the "Before" and "After" bottle, also been called "Happy / Sad" ...

The bottle comes in all clear, or Frosted and clear. They come with or without the embossing. They have been found with acid etched or engraved advertising on them. They have a ground neck to receive a stopper to which the correct stopper is a faceted stopper with a flat top (Not a pointed top).

The bottle was manufactured at the North Wheeling Glass co., Wheeling, WV

The bottle is part of a set of bottles that were produced as Back Bar bottles between 1891 - 1918. Those other bottles include the Tri-cornered Castle, Ear of Corn and the Elephant head with upright trunk.

Thanks all for your assistance.

By "back bar," do you mean like a decanter that was filled with other spirits?

Is it desirable and collectible?

The expert I talked to said your bottle is worth about $50, I think it could do better on Ebay personally, and it probably would have come full with a whiskey or some other liquor when given out, and after that it would/could be used as a decanter on the mantel of your bar...
