we had a nice dig, the hole dated late 17's to 1810ish. 2 early saltglazed vessels were the best finds along with a very early green London mustard. Lot's of broken staffordshire unfortunately very little went back together.

there was a limited amount of space in the inner cities, so more often than not property lines havent changed from the time the original plots were drawn. Because of this they refitted the original privy time and time again. It's amazing we dug through three or four feet of "fedral law forbids".....

seems to be rarely a good sign when we find a pipe going into the pit....

That was actually one of two pipes running through the pit the other one we had to remove to get the pit opened. I have no problem with cast iron pipes running out of the pit but its those big terracotta pipes that drain into the pit that I dread. When I see that I fill the pit in and don't dig it.
