I think that this qualifies as a bottle and I hope that my classification as an inkwell is correct.
The material is porcelain and the decoration is hand painted with the gold having been applied after firing. The base is 1 3/4 inches square and height is three inches. This is the first inkwell that I have purchased so any help in determining age and/or origin would be welcome. I can not find any markings.

I think you're right- on with the inkwell ID. Are you sure it's not heavy opaque glass as opposed to porcelain? It looks very similar to some glass ones produced by the Mt. Washington glass company around the turn of the century...However the shiny brass fitting makes me question that it was made by them or that it is that old. Very hard to tell from photo. Here is the url of a Mt. Washington listing from ebay. Sorry I haven't learned how to do a link, or you can just search Mt. washington inkwell and maybe find some other comparison. Very nice looking piece. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Victorian-C1880s-INKWELL-Opaque-BLUE-Mt-Washington-Swirled-Rib-Hinged-/260951192958?nma=true&si=xTWDkkRiXXnoZBNSG%2FA9WwYuUas%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Definitely inkwell. Broadly speaking, "victorian". Say anywhere from 1870 to after the turn of the century. They seem to be very hard to date without markings. Although, knowing this forum, if someone can date it for you, they WILL here. There is a collector/expert on about everything here...

I have seen a number of new to the market vases and inkwells with hand painted decorations that are made to look old, not saying that's what you have there, but I have noticed it as a trend the last couple of years. Yours looks like a European piece, but again I'm no expert.

The material is porcelain. The shine on the brass is a result of someone using brass polish. There are remnants of the polish that were not removed. I am certain that the item is not new.
