Tearing down a wall in an 1864-ish house, I located four bottles and a cork. Three of the bottles are identical while the fourth is a little different. The three common bottles' faces are embossed with:

BOTTLE SEAL Co
PAT. '85
BALTo Md

These all have a common smooth necks/mouths of the bottle (not cappable I am guessing)

The other bottle is embossed with:

BOTTLE SEAL Co
PAT. 85
BALTIMORE

This one has a grove etched in around the mouth of the bottle (cappable version?)

Both bottles have PAT 85 embossed on the bottom.

I have found out that the Bottle Seal Co quickly became the Crown Cork and Seal Co after the success of the Crown cap (1892 or so), but little else on the history of these bottles. Does anybody have an idea on the bottle dates (I'm guessing between 1885 and 1892?) or value? I'll try to get lower res images uploaded at some point.

Thanks for any info you may have!

Here is the one that matched none of the others.

These are good bottles and are listed as very rare in the Baltimore book though I guess more are found all the time and that rating may change. Both versions are listed in the book and both are listed as having a Baltimore Loop Seal which is the groove you speak of. Are you saying the others don't have the groove as that could be something real good if they are unlisted?

cobaltbot - sorry I didn't post the mouth of the three common bottles. As you can see, it is different than the other one in so much as there is no grove on the outside of the bottle.

I believe what you are posting is the "steamer soda" versions which while collectable do not bring the +$100 like the beer bottles will. (Unless your Cobalt!)
Please post a full picture of the entire bottle.

Well I am impressed with this thread. The question is was that groove in the finish made with a tool, or are there seams on the finishes? With those dates, I doubt if there are. I will have to go back and evaluate the embossing.

Here is the full bottle of the one with the apparently machined groove on the top.
