For the past year, since my retirement, I have been busy remodeling an early 1900s house. A better description is that I am completely rebuilding under a new roof. Last week I was tearing out the attic floor when this fell out. A wooden cugar box lid from the 1930s.

The picture in the center of the lid grabbed my interest and I began doing a web search on where the fort looking building was located. Turns out that it is a illustration of the Morro Castle Fortress in Havana, Cuba. If you look closely on the left side of the illustration, you can see a steam ship (twin turbo generators), which is the S S Morro Castle named after the fortress. The SS Morro Castle made trips from New York to Havanna from 1930 to 1934. On September 8,1934 the ship caught fire and 137 passengers and crew perished. I had never heard of this tragedy. The trips to Cuba were during prohibition during the four years the ship operated. It was never determined how the fire started. The fancy wood paneling contributed to the fire's rapid spreading.
