An old building owned by the city had a wall to collapse making the building unsafe. So the city rented a trackhoe and pushed down the remaining walls. It looked like a good place to dig once the debris was hauled off. I made sure I had all the permissions to dig. Mayor says it's OK. Trackhoe operator is on my fire department. He lets me know when he is moving the debris and is carefull not to disturb the crawl space area. Things are just going too good.

I dug down to undisturbed dirt once the debris had been removed from the front of the building. The building had been used as a funeral home at one time. Found two embalming fluid bottles along with a soda and other bottles. Nothing really old at this point.

I was getting discouraged at this point. It looked like a typical 20's to 40's stuff. No broken glass shards of earlier glass or signs that anything older was here. But I kept on digging and moving toward the rear of the building when I hit a foundation within the current building's foundation. You can see the row of bricks in the center of the photo.

Suddenly there were pottery shards everywhere. All broken and all burned. So was this an earlier dump under the building? I kept as many shards as I could. Haven't had the chance to see if any pieces fit together yet. Also there was a rust layer. I kept the piece that has the aqua bimal bottle encased.

Some of the pottery is embossed Cartwright Bros. Semi Granite. Some were from England.

Also found some solid copper stencils. I went back to see if there were any more, and that's when it happened. The trackhoe and dump trucks are gone. The site is taped off. Seems the EPA has put a hold on the cleanup. Some issues about where the debris was going. Everything was cleared before the demolition was started, so why the issues now. I checked with the city and they are waiting on a letter once again to clear the site. So I am just sitting here waiting to begin digging again. Just my luck. Anyway, I did a little research on the site. There was a large mercantile here before the current building. The building burned and was replaced by the current building that appeared to have been built in the 20's. Buster

Did a web search on the Cartwright Bros. Semi Granite pottery. The factory was in East Liverpool. Ohio and operated from 1880 to 1896. They produced table wares and toilet wares. Buster

Great to see ya digging Buster but you're not in your usual mud, maybe wait for a rainstorm! Maybe some of that pottery will glue back?

Thanks for looking Rick. I'm ready to get back at digging there. I tried to do some research on when the mercantile was built. Found it on the 1922 Sanborn map. The buisnesses in town were started somewhere around the 1850's. No privies down here to dig, so you have to keep an eye out for dumps and construction areas. Buster
