I recently found a stash of old beer bottles underwater near the possible site of 19th century tavern here on Whidbey Island Washington. From what I have been able to determine the bottles[attachment=R Bottle.JPG] were manufactured from 1870 to 1910. There is a "R" embossed on the bottom. I have not been able to find any reference to any bottler using this logo but I suspect that it might be an early Ranier Beer bottle. I'll send another email with a photo of the bottom of the bottle. Any information would be appreciated.

Not familiar with it, but it is very colorful. Looking at the base I would guess that it is of UK manufacture. The "R" could stand for RAINIER, but I would doubt that. I have several RAINIER bottles and none are base embossed like this specimen. No other embossing makes me think it has little demand so minimal value. Still an attractive piece thanks for sharing.

a common 1890s to 1910 ale.turnmold.

I have to think that P2 Dive simply did not capture the mold seam in his photo--the seam likely being rotated away from the camera's view. As I understand the turned-in-mold process, commonly referred to a "turn mold", it would have obliterated the "R" embossed on the base. That said, I now have to go take another look at several similar bottles that I recovered in western WA state in 1970-1971. Several of those were dug, or even picked up from the surface, near Stanwood, WA, a location in the same general region, east of, the northern end of Whidbey and Camano Islands

Hi P2 Dive,

Are you still active in the antique bottle hunting and collecting hobby? I'm in western Washington state and about to resume the hobby in retirement.

Please respond either way--I'm seeking local contacts to discuss antique bottles and, possibly, partner with on digs. (I have several dive prospects located.)

Regards,

Will Long
