I picked this pair of decanters up at a local flea market last year, and I`d like to find out who made them, if possible. I know that is asking a lot with this early glass, but someone here may know the pattern or something else about them that may ring a bell. I doubt that the stoppers belong to them, but they fit. The bodies of these look to be possibly pressed, or blown into a mold. From the shoulders up they are hand formed with applied rings at the bases of the necks and formed lips. The shoulders and necks carry the form of the paneling on the body right up to the top of the lip. I lust noticed that one is a little fatter than the other, but the patterns are the same and both are 11" tall to the top of the lips. Any info or help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated!

So there isn't a lot of help showing up here. I like the looks of them. So you can get back to me at your leasure. <bottlemysteries@yahoo.net> I also still have some hit and miss engines to sell next summer in N.Y.. My brother is Harry Matthews and he is really into old engines with the homepage: Harry's Old Engines. RED Matthews

These bottles were blown - only. There was no pressing involved. As to the cleanness of the flutes they might have been cleaned by a wheel. Are there any seams? There are probably two and possibly three. Then the next question is how far do they go up on the bottle? They look like good ones. RED Matthews

The chain holding the back behind bar sign is interesting. What is it made of and is it painted. It looks to be in excellent shape for its age. Also, Red, how was the stopper made and how was the flowering fluted base made so perfectly symmetrical?

Hi Red, there aren`t any seems that I can see. There are 9 lines going up from the top of the panels and extending right up to the top, which I think might be from mold marks that were carried upward when the neck and shoulders were stretched and formed. I could be totally wrong about that also, but that`s what i was thinking. As for the chain, it looks to be corroded copper or brass. The signs themselves have a metal back with a baked on porcelain-like finish on the front of them.I agree that they are good, and I was hoping to find out more info on them. When I found them, we had gotten to the flea market about 10:00AM, which is late for me, but most of the time when I go late, I find something good. An antique dealer had them with no price marked. I asked how much and couldn`t get my wallet out fast enough when he said $50!Red, if you are interested, we might be able to trade towards an engine possibly. My wife doesn`t want me to part with them, but she likes the old engines too, so maybe we could do something. I want to eventually make our little farm a working museum with antique equipment, so I`m always looking for things! A few years ago you told me about your brother`s website, and I`ve been active on it ever since as rustysteele. Thanks!

Well , The stoppers would have been blown. Do the show mold seams? Probably not if they were wheel dressed after the blowing. A lot of stoppers will have a broken off rough edge. With the cleanliness of every thing. I am sure they were dressed there also. I really think they are very neat (beautiful) really. I still have a lot of antique tools, outboard motors, hit and miss engines, antique boats, lightning rods and stuff to liquidate in NY. We will be back there in May probably. I know there is one or two Bixby bottles there also. I have a lot of black-smithing tools, two forges, anvils, with the inserts for special working, hammers etc. I just went through a lot of phases in life - without time to do all of them. Well I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS THREAD~!! I found the book I remembered seeing something like these bottles. On page 52 in the book "The Country Life Book of GLASS" BY - Frank Davis first published in 1966. There are two similar decanters in picture 78. that are very similar. They are indicated to be English and dated about 1750. Check with your library and they might be able to get you a copy to compare. If you email me your email address - I can get a couple pages copied and send them to you. RED Matthews <bottlemysteries@yahoo.net>

Hi Red, thanks for the info! I see that I can get that book on eBay pretty cheap, so I`ll just get the whole book, there may be some other interesting things there too. Thanks for your help, I knew somebody here would know something or could find out where to look!
