Thanks Jim,Roger here are some examples of American Cup Plates. These can be as historical as American Historical Flasks. The first plate is attributed to the Union Flint Glass Company of Kensington Near Philadelphia. This is listed as # 104 by Ruth Webb Lee and James H Rose authoritarians and Authors of of American Glass Cup Plates. All Union Flint Glass pieces are rare and very collectable. This plate is an early pressed between 1826 and 1830. [attachment=P1130221 (Medium).JPG] [attachment=P1130222 (Medium).JPG] [attachment=P1130223 (Medium).JPG]

Those are amazing pieces of glass, I vote this should also be a new category. How do you date them so precisely?

Hi Sharon The dating of the glass has been done for me by glass historians who have written countless books on the subject. In my own research some of the historical glass was part of political campaigns such as Henry Clays and William Henry Harrison's and National events of importance, such as Lafayette's visit to the United States, Presidents, war heroes, Our Country's 50th anniversary, famous battle ships and the Masons being in power from 1825 to 1835 which accounts for the large amount of Masonic decor in that era. Here are some rare 6 sided cup plates. The first one is the a steam Steam Boat Commemorative cup plate honoring Lafayette's trip up the Mississippi River to the Ohio eastward to Pittsburgh. Again a ship this time a schooner from the same Pittsburgh District. Notice the outer Shoulder serrations area of this plate matches the previous one. This is one of the ways a glass historian is able to attribute a piece of glass to a particular Glass works. Hi Steve, Nice glass pictures. I have a neat old cup plate that I found a picture of in Rhea Knittle's book and I know that it was early Sandwich/ pressed ware. I know that information on these old pieces needs some better coverage, but I doubt there are enough people that care. I have read a lot about the pressed glass history and it is very interesting the way it developed in America by a mans visit to France. Miss you on the Forum. I would like to visit South Jersey - but my old age is putting me down. RED M.

Thanks Red,Pressed Plates ,salts and decanters are just another extension of utilitarian glass ware, they all hold something so are they really that different from bottles. The patterns and art work on these pieces really showed the talent some of the mold departments had. Here is another plate honoring and promoting Henry Clays Presidential bid in 1832 in bright blue. Here is another Presidential Campaign being displayed on quite a bit of these plates. No other Presidential race in the history of our country featured more items associated with the candidate then William Henry Harrison's run for the Presidency. The United States presidential election of 1840 was the 14th quadrennial presidential election, held from Friday, October 30, to Wednesday, December 2, 1840. It saw President Martin Van Buren fight for re-election during a time of great economic depression against a Whig Party unified for the first time behind war hero William Henry Harrison and his "log cabin campaign". Rallying under the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too" armed with this information makes it easy to know when, where and why these plates were made. This first one was made at The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and is really quite symbolic yet simple. The Log Cabin,The Cider Barrel and the Flag. [attachment=P1140130 (Large).JPG] [attachment=P1140131 (Large).JPG] [attachment=P1140132 (Large).JPG]

One more simple Harrison Plate showing him as President. There is another plate which is identical to this one which came out into circulation about three months prior to the election in 1840 but it is blank in the area of the pennant where it says President on this one. Dating this plate is easy because of the date 1841 stamped on it. [attachment=P1140134 (Large).JPG] [attachment=P1140135 (Large).JPG] [attachment=P1140136 (Large).JPG]
