Hey Guys, I found this small bottle while searching for pottery under an old home in the area. This one has damage to the neck but another one found with this is undamaged. Is this an ink, a perfume bottle or something else entirely? We also found two intact and pontiled umbrella inks with these... Any information would be appreciated. Thanks,Chris

Very nice find. In the for what-it-is-worth department, I also think it was some kind of smelly stuff. Hopefully it was strong enough to keep the smells of 1820 away. Scott

Very nice! If being in "The Book" means the McKearins thought it was American than I guess so, it doesn't mention a glasshouse though. I'd say 1840 give or take a decade.

probably Eau de lilac as in the movie High Plains Drifter when the Stranger was trying to get a bath & shave," its only 10 cents more. Lilac water, the ladies love it. Shall we make it an even dollar? No." The bottle would pre date that period but that's what came to mind. Tim

Nice find Chris, I collect these colognes another very under rated bottle. I think George Mckearin probably lived in your neighborhood at one time and just used to discard the damaged examples from his collection!!!LOL!!!! A little bottle humor. Is that possible Here is the information from Mc'kearin and Wilson's Book "American Bottles And Flasks and their Ancestry" Pages 396 and 397. The description is on page 396 the bottle is pictured on 397 # 12. What I can add to the equation is that this bottle was most likely made at the Joel Bodine owned Washington Glass works in Williamstown New Jersey as your bottle appears in a description in their 1848 price lists. Williamstown had a huge market in New York City. Geographically the Williamstown works were located just west of dead center of Southern New Jersey. To get the glass up to New York City was not that difficult thanks to a stage road Built by Glass house owners in that small area of Southern New Jersey beginning with,Joel Bodine,William Coffin (Coffin and Hay Fame",Johnathan Haines (Gloucester Glass Works in Clementon),Johnathan Haines at (Waterford) and Frederick Stanger (New Brooklyn). The road traversed the Eastern part Of Gloucester County and stopped in Hammonton at the Mullica River which flowed east toward The great Egg harbor inlet and from there a short ride up to New York City. These glass house owners were the tycoons of their day. Plenty of Capital to work with to get things done. [attachment=P1140149 (Large).JPG] [attachment=P1140147 (Large).JPG] [attachment=back_reduced 2.jpg]

Wow Steve...again, you are an amazing resource! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to track this down. I didn't realize there was that much information out there. Chris
