To Whom It May Concern,It is round, open pontil, though smoothed apparently or refired. It has the twists I have seen in mid-western glasshouses. I was hoping someone may recognize it and send me in the right direction. The top knob has been cut off or "tooled" as has the rounded out rim. I can send more pictures if needed. I also have a similar pitcher. I will post pictures of this next. Thanks for any info you can give me.Joel edit: The third picture is actually the pitcher bottom showing the open pontil.

I like them. I am especially interested in the applied handles on old glassware. My main interest is if there are any tool marks - where some type of tool was used in applying the glass. If you are selling - please let me know. RED M.

It looks more ground/polished pontil than refired. That was most common on 20th century pieces and largely laboratory types. I always figured the lab types as functional for heat distribution with burner use and the the decorative types as aesthetics.I have no idea where it was made but I'm going with 20th century on both. Maybe Blenko?

I figure it was mid-western (Ohio?) and was TOC. I have seen only one other one and not in as good shape and without the lid. I don't believe it is Blenko. I am confused by the lab types and decorative types as aesthetics. Did you mean the burner or the jar/pontil?Thanks for your input!Joel

Red,If you like American handles, take a look at these small creamer pitchers. All have applied handles though I am not sure if they show tooling marks. My wife took the liberty of boxing up several of my window bottles so I will have to find the boxes and check the handles more closely. These are from file pictures. If any strike you as interesting, let me know and I will take closer photo's for you. I believe all handles were pre-made and applied later.Joel

As you can see, I don't leave much house space without my obsessive bottle collecting. My wife is at her wits end with me, I think. I tell her from time to time I am going to start selling some. She told me when I say that I am going to sell some, she worries I am going to get more. I suppose, when I start to research what other auction venues are selling that I do see something else I like and buy that to add to an already overflowing collection. Joel

I always figured WV as part of the mid-west and Blenko has been around from before the TOC. I just through the name out there though.

Back to you Joel - First of all the handle has to be applied while the product is still as hot as possible. The handle is then lifted from the glass furnace pot with a lifting bar and no doubt just cut to a length appropriate for the product. It is then applied at the top or the bottom depending on the design goal of the product. Then it is pulled giving it some taper an applied on the other end to the hot glass - where it goes. I have an interest in the tools they used to press that other end - to the product. I have two with a double metal rod mark from a pressing tool. Just before the pressing they would have cut the glass length before the second application. Just the process and procedure study fascinates me to study the products. Having worked with glass making - different companies around the world - I have seen a lot of glass making things ( from military tank windows to bottles to tubing and light bulbs. It just strengthened my love of glass making and collecting. RED Matthews
