Found this Tuesday about two miles from my house only half buried behind a circa 1850 - 1910 foundation. It's about six inches tall, no embossing, smooth base.[attachment=vvvvv.JPG]I'm not sure on the opening, I think it's tooled. I'd love to know the specific thing to call the tooling, and the approx. age of bottle.[attachment=bbnn.JPG]I guess 1880's, but not sure.[attachment=ccvv.JPG]

With those seed bubbles & crudity I would guess a little earlier, 1870's. Looks like the kind I find here that were replacing the Pikes Peak style flasks. Hard to tell as the base is hard to make out and no other context to match it to as one would get from a privy or dump. But that's my guess, and regardless, a beauty! Nice find. Jack

I would say post civil war era for sure. Interesting top. Does not appear to have any pontil markings on the bottom. Real nice find!

Nice little flask. Too bad it's not embossed. (Of course if it was embossed, it would have been broken!)

Cool bottle utility man.I'm referring to Allegany County NY, where I live. (No "h")It's a very rural county in southwestern NY.I dig actually throughout western NY.I collect a variety of Buffalo, Rochester, Olean, Hornell, etc. (NY non-NY city) bottles; produced in Lockport, Corning, LeRoy, (NY) etc. glass-works). Thanks

Thanks cannibal, mrkieth49, Bass assassin.I love the enclosure, and the overall crudity. Of course I too wish it was embossed, but I'll take the fact that as far as I can tell it's an easy cleanup from being in mint condition.I will say until shown otherwise that it is an 1870's era bottle.

I guess I just did not pay attention to the detail on your name. I was hoping to meet a fellow collector close to home. Thanks for the kind words on the bottle it is a tough Alleghany VA variant to find. I collect VA spring waters and open pontil utility bottles. Keep up the hunting and by the looks of this flask you are in a area that has some older glass lurking around. I hope you are able to locate more and be careful while out digging!
