This bottle base was found at an 1830's Potawatomie Catholic mission in eastern Kansas. The remaining lettering says "HAUT" and "AUTERNES." After a quick google search, it appears that it probably originally said "Haut Sauternes." Sauternes is a wine produced in the Sauternais region of France. Can anyone tell me more about it?[attachment=IMG_20140530_21000...(2) (1024x576).jpg]

It is possible it could be from around the mid-1800's, but it doesn't seem quite that old. Welcome to the forum!

I suppose it could be. I'm certainly no expert when it comes to glass and bottles.

The base is not of uniform thickness around its perimeter.

Here is a photo of the interior surface. It does have a small punt-like, off-center bulge of glass on the interior.

Could it be a seal from the side of a larger bottle?

Yep, definitely a glass seal. Glass seals have been used a lot longer than any other form of embossing, so that could put it in the time frame you're thinking. Mind you, in Europe they were used up until the 20th century, so dating it that way is quite hard. But you've got a good lead to go on if you can find a picture of an intact bottle with that seal. Unfortunately haut is just the French word for upper (as in "Upper Sauternais"), so that makes things a bit harder.
