I have a chance to poke around in a local area originally settled in the early 1800's. I've got some of the homesites spotted, but they are pretty far off the road. My question to you experienced country dump diggers is what is the minimum equipment to take with me on my first trip into the woods, assuming a hike of up to about a half mile. From what I've read here, I know to look along creek beds & tops of ravines. The homesites are gone, part of cultivated fields & pastures now.

Hi Tim, -5' bottle probe.-Shovel. Even a short handle one.-Maybe a spud bar or pick axe for hard ground.-Camera for taking bearing photos.-Notebook for describing bearings.(triangulation bearings are more accurate than GPS numbers if done correctly)-Some flagging tape and stakes if you want to make it even easier. Consider your first time in a sampling/recon trip.
