As mentioned in my last post, I dug out a normal wood liner as opposed to the oddball barrel privies I have found lately. This one eluded me in the beginning, as I thought I probed a decent feeling hole about 3 feet away. That one turned out to be just an ash pit with zero trash/glass/bone. So I probed around it a little, knowing sometimes the privy hole is nearby the ash pit as they often used the ashes like lime to cut down the stench as well as rid the unwanted ash, killing two birds.....After I opened it up I discovered glass right off in the cap, just not the age I was hoping for. This house dates to at least the late 1860's, and I was finding early 1900 frags. Well, OK, toc works for me too, just was hoping for something older. Never know what's in the hole though 'til it gets dug. So, getting it dug I did. First pic is the hole about 6' level. Most of day one was spent digging through several layers of ash and some scattering of trash and an occasional bottle. The last foot and a half was where the majority of the glass was found. I got down to the bottom in one corner at the 8' level where I dug a busted, then a whole Hood's Sarsaparilla. Well, at least it was the one with Apothecaries on the backside. All the other stuff were common Worcestershire sauce, Durkee's, etc. Only keeper for day one was a pharmacy style bottle embossed for the KATY railroad hospital dept. Dug one last year and this one is much different. Very cool.

Day two and I thought I would be done and filled in by a couple hours but ended up digging 4 hours. The glass was prolific, and in the center of the hole they were stacked up on top of each other, as if they lightly sank and came to rest very gently. On my way opening up the bottom level, I came across a tall variant of Kilmer's Swamp-root sample cure bottle. It caught my attention as I have had one haunting nemesis for years, namely the common Kilmer's cure large size with all the embossings. I have dug numerous half sizes, dozens of the short samples, and more than my share of the large sized Remedy bottles. But a large CURE? Noooo! Until now. It was as if the bottle goddess decided it was time. Finally! Full count was 5 Kilmer's, 4 large cures, one medium size and the mentioned tall sample! Then there were 5 Hood's, and all were in remarkable shape, no dings chips, nicks, or even sickness in the glass. One Hood's looks shiny brand new and one Kilmer's has just a wisp of haze. Don't recall digging so many large bottles at the bottom of a hole and come out so nice! And the only broken one was the first Hood's I encountered on day one. I would guess 90% of everything was whole in this pit. Gotta love those 90's pits, with glass and good percentage whole! Looks like that sample bottle did it's job well! First pic is an in situ shot of 5 large bottles nestled together on the bottom of the pit. The three on the bottom l-r were a Hoods, a broken Paines, & a large Kilmer's. Another large Kilmer's is just above the three on the bottom, while a huge slick rests comfortably in the left corner. Next shot shows the 4 survivors of the 5. Last pic is the hole at the bottom 8 foot level about half way through the dig.

Next pic is the dirty hoard in the wild, with a cool swan dish lid or possible fancy salt dish. The next is the hoard cleaned up and the nemisis, no longer, having finally been tamed. Now I'm ready to dig a Kilmer's Heart Remedy! I think I have paid my dues, & then some!

Still my favorite of the dig that I would trade all the Kilmer's for, is the bottle that literally rolled into my lap and I had never seen in cobalt before, the gorgeous Carter's Indelible ink. It just made the icing on the cake! Jack

Excellent finds Jack! You really worked for them too. How did you shoot the hospital department bottle in the third picture? Was the back light incandescent? Did you back off on the exposure time? I like that look.

Thanks all, Macaco, I used a cheapo Cannon and shot with a ceiling light in background, and zoomed in until I got a clear pic, as they are hit & miss on zoom. Clearly, I am a total novice when it comes to photography.....but I manage to get by (lucky) from time to time. Jack

Jack, as always you make us feel we are right there with you. Congratulations on conquering your nemesis. I have found that those Rail Road bottles transcend the bottle hobby and excite Rail Road buffs a lot. They don't come across them much it seems and there are a lot of collectors. Thanks for sharing, please keep the stories coming.

Great dig Jack. That sample cure is sweet! I've never seen a carter's like that either. Very nice in that cobalt blue. Is the swan piece broken? Maybe a service piece? That was a very successful dig in my book. Thanks for the in situ photos. Gotta love it when you're trying to work a bottle free then 2-3 more show themselves. Were you by yourself this time?
