Water-based bottle hunting is how I started. It's given me all my best pieces. I am curious as to how many of you do most of your bottle hunting in water and what have you found. Furthermore, what is the best way to water-hunt other than feeling with your feet and without diving in (The lake is dark and full of debris, I've been tangled before in line and bump into sharp objects often)?
Another thing: Do you agree that water does a better job preserving bottles--still to slow-moving water--- or do you think being stuck in the ground keeps them best?
Okay, so I like to talk a lot. Anyway, what's the deal with state parks and their wanting to see your finds and keep them if they want?
I do not know if the pictures will post, so... but they show bottles I found in the lake last year. Including one ACL Squirt, three 100+ year-old Coca-Cola (One's in half, one's cracked, one's intact--it would appear, from the metal pellet still in one, they were used as B-B target practice--) and 2 bottles from before prohibition. These show the water-based hunt as successful, whereas my land-based ones usually turn up shattered glass and bugs.I know many are inclined to disagree with me as to where to hunt as being better or worse or equal and such.

I don't water hunt myself, but I have seen videos where they use pitchforks to probe the bottom for that delightful sound of glass.Lisa

I've found lots of bottles in the water the last couple of years , I find if you do some research and find some good locations you can find some neat stuff . just about ready to go swimming again here , water is warming up and some locations already in mind last summer found a really neat local soda water bottle in a few feet of water near beach of local park , could only see a small % of the bottle as it was in sand but pulled it out and its near mint condition

RCO, that is beautiful and a wonderful find to get in shallow water. I have to go out deeper, everything near shore except my '48 Squirt were waist-deep to neck-deep. I hope you have a great time at the beach and good luck! I went today--Kayaking. Found what's left of a Big Red bottle. That and turtles--I love turtles. The water's warmed up here, too. Went to the woods and had better luck. The problem with me researching locations is I'm only 17 with no license. Can't get far. Heh. So, gotta stick within bike-riding distance and kayak trips. Have a great time!

I have a friend that welded washers on the pitchfork tines to help prevent damage which really work great. Has anyone else ever tried anything similar?

Have you ever considered trying some type of sand flea rake? They work well in the sand but not so well in mud, weeds and sticks etc like the modified pitchfork would.

It's a very good idea, but the lake I hunt in is mainly mud-like sediments and plant life. So.... Furthermore, that's pich up everything. Metal, brick, broken glass.... Still, great idea.
