Dug this good sized stone liner last couple days. Damn near gave up on it several times. Only reason I didn't was because the house dated to the mid 60's, and due to so much rubble, I couldn't get any read with my probe. That said, I almost quit at the 5 foot level, then the 7 foot level with only a scant few bit and pieces of what looked like 1890's stuff, then the 8 foot level where finally I was able to get my probe anywhere and seemed to be a shallow use layer about the 11-12 foot level. Only 8 feet of rubble, but who's complaining? ME! I'm too old to be lumping hunks of limestone that weigh as much as I do! So I get into the use layer and sure enough, all toc stuff! Well, I invested too much time & effort to quit now, so onward I go. The bottles were far and few between and oddly enough with all the tonnage on top of it all, there were some whole ones! All commoners and mostly slicks. The cool stuff were the non bottles.......A flowery spittoon with enough pieces to glue most of it back, a nice sleepy eye doll with only the left arm missing, likely in the dirt pile still, and a nice Chinese urn with foo dogs on the sides and the lid with a foo dog on top, found about 3 feet away. The tail is missing on the lid and the main body missing from the right side dog. I made note of this and kept an eye out and actually found the missing piece to the right side and glued it back! What are the chances? And then the weird medical device thingy, embossed around the shoulder Erie Medical Co, Buffalo NY. It is about a foot long with a large opening at one end, and a small opening at the top(?) where a lead cap sits. The cap was firmly in place when I dug it but easily came off when I tried to remove it. The very top is flat but looks broken and inside the cap are what appear to be threads. The glass appears machine made so I first assumed the threads got broken off. Problem is, there is no more room inside the cap to rest on the shoulder of the top as it does now if it were threaded, so I suspect it was as made and not broken. Anyone seen one before? I find zero listings for the Erie Medical co. anywhere. Jack

It may have been for treating Syphilis or Gonorrhea, a big problem back then. Better than smashing it with a hanner.Ep
