Hello,I recently found this one while diving. This bottle has an open pontil on the base and has a whittled glass effect all throughout. It is about 6 inches tall and is embossed with "Rushton & Aspinwall Chemists / NOs 86 William Street, 110 Broadway, 10 Astor House New York". Does anyone have any info on this bottle such as company info, value, age, rarity, variations, etc etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! I think
the only one with the old house soon after it first started was William
Hegeman. I can recollect when he was a smart, active boy in William street,
not over twelve years of age. After Rushton & Aspinwall dissolved, I think
Mr. Aspinwall kept on the wholesale store in William street, and Rushton the
retail drug store on Broadway, under the firm of Rushton & Co. Mr. Rushton
took in a Mr.Clarke who had formerly been a partner in the firm of Clarke &
Saxton, in Broadway. Shortly after, Rushton died. I think at that time Mr.
Hegeman, Who was the man of the business, was a partner of Rushton & Co.,
and afterwards Rushton, Clarke & Co.. The stores were at 110 and 273
Broadway, and 10 Astor House, in 1850. Clarke was no druggist. Then the firm
was Clarke, Hegeman & Co. Then Clarke left, and his son came in under the
firm of Hegeman, Clarke & Co., with stores at 165, 273, 511 and 756
Broadway. Later it became Hegeman & Co., occupying the above stores, except
changing 273 to 399 Broadway. I believe the company consists of Henry King,
who has charge at 399 Broadway, corner of Walker, and of Ray B. Easterbrook,
who is at 511, under the St. Nicholas. They have an establishment for making
soda water, that supplies the whole city.

Mr. Hegeman himself is not only the best druggist in the city, but he
is a man of great wealth and refinement. He has his house filled with
pictures of great merit, and what is more meritorious, he painted them
himself.

Great pontil! I love all the addresses embossed on the back. The colored examples are some of the most highly prized pontiled medicines around, so I bet this one is fairly sought after as well.

Even though I don't collect New Yawk bottles, I'd keep that one if I found it. Nice early cylinder. Some of the oldest San Francisco druggist/apothecary bottles are cylinders. But few and far between are pontilled. And don't tumble it! Keep it as-found pristine. Wherever you happened to be diving I'd go back...

I would go back for sure, I just looked at my auction guide report of 2003, it lists amber and greenolive and green with yellow tones and yellow amber. They all sell for between $3,575.00 and $7,425.00. from 90 to 2002 all open pontiled. doesn't show an aqua colored example................

So Beach Comber - It looks like woou hit pay dirt. When I got ready to write to you I went to your registry page and found your name is n/a. I never heard of that name! I also see where you have asked for a lot of help on different bottles. Things work both ways in a forum like this. We like to hear about where you found it, dug it, swam for it, It is obvious you have a great bottle there - but ?????????? RED Matthews
