Hey Folks, After church today, while waiting for brunch, my wife and I strolled down the street to an antique store and found these two items. The demijohn is about 2 gallons in volume, 18 inches tall and about 9 in diameter. The other, I thought was a canning jar with an iron clamp BUT when I looked closer at it, there are two "eyes" in the lid where something hung off the lid and was suspended in the jar. The jar is pressed glass, no mold lines and a finely ground surface on the top. The glass is maybe a quarter of an inch thick. Now I'm thinking some kind of scientific ware. There is a patent date of June 11, 1895 on the glass lid and the screw mechanism, but no company name. Any guesses as to what it is? Scott

Don't kill me. I paid less than $25 including tax. No pontil and no glass house marks, but the lip is applied. When the light is better tomorrow, I'll take a picture of my three amber demijohns. I ask my wife for permission to buy bottles that won't fit on my shelves and she said yes to this one. I was covered in wicker recently. Some one spray painted the wicker gold and then took the wicker off the bottle. I cleaned up the overspray and took that picture. Scott

Yep, museum specimen jar, I'm pretty sure Whitall Tatum made them. They come in a bunch of different sizes, the lid definitely helps the value!

Here's a picture of my three amber demijohns taken in my back yard. The big one is the one I got on Sunday. For a scale, it is about 18" tall. I got the medium sized one three or four years ago in St. Charles, Missouri and the smaller one at a garage sale here in town like a year or so ago for five bucks. All three have applied lips.

Well I have at least fourty demi's - with the biggest a ten gallon job that took a strong man to hold that much glass up on a blow pipe and a heck of a lot of air to blow it. I just got a wicker covered one like you pictured and I have have one just like it that had the wicker removed. I also have ten ohers that have some neat different types of wicker work on them. Next summer I will take pictures of all of them for others to see. RED Matthews
