Seems like I've seen pictures of items similar to this before, but don't remember where. I found it in a thrift/junk/antique place for 6 bucks, so I took a chance, especially since they had it laying in a glass dish just waiting to be broken. The ribbed melon part is blown, four-mold with a tooled rim. The lid is pressed in matching color. The hardware, for the most part, looks original. Overall height with chains hanging: 18.5". Melon, with brass fitting: 5" d. x 7.25 h. Lid: 3.875" d. There's a slight whittle to the blown part, with an occasional bubble, and a couple of small potstones. The fitting on the lid would allow a wire to pass through, but the one on the melon looks like a petcock for draining, along with more corrosion than the other brass parts. Let me know if you needs more pictures or close-ups of any part. Thanks in advance for any help y'all can offer. [attachment=globe.JPG]

Kinda looks like those things that used to (and sometimes still do) hang in the windows of old fashioned drug stores. Not sure what they're called.

if it is Victorian it may have held a candle The top baffle would indicate ether stopping heat or reflecting light.

I didn't respond right off, but I thought it didn't sound/look quite right for a pharmacy globe and looked in my books on miniature lamps and believe this is what yours is. Some are longer or shorter and I have had that same dragon looking collar before which first caught my eye. Price is from an "updated" 2nd edition from 2006. Other 2 are for comparison and are called float lamps or candle lamps. Cranberry color is of the highest order to collectors, in general. Regardless, an exceptional find for $6!!! Hope this helps. Jack

Thanks, everyone for your replies. I was leaning towards it being a light of some kind because of the lid hardware, but what kind, I didn't know. At least, that's what it will be now. I've got an old floor light stand that kicked around home before I was a kid. They look great together. Even the wife liked it, which is a huge accomplishment. Hopefully, I can find an old tarnished brass lamp socket. I'll post the complete assembly when I get it together. Thanks again for everybody's help.
