Hello all, I have recently found this odd looking pot. I have never seen one like it and was hoping that someone on this site could shed some light. Any info at all such as where its from, age, what the lid looks like, what the holes are for etc etc. This may help - The area that I am diving in at the moment is producing bottles and other types of pots from the 1880 - 1900 period. Maybe this pot is from that era? I have placed a large Kilmers medicine (also from the same spot) to show the size of the pot. In addition to the three manufactured holes on the top, there is also two very small handles. I imagine that this is for holding the lid down. Thanks![attachment=20150317_173500.jpg] [attachment=20150317_173509.jpg] [attachment=20150317_173531.jpg]

Pots like that were usually for either home canning of meats, etc. or with labels to sell similar products. The two ears were for a wire semi circle with a wooden handle where the hand would grasp it. The holes in the sides are for a wire to pass through to hold down a flat earthen wear or possibly glass lid. The lid is slightly taller than the wire passing through to provide downward tension. I'm pretty sure someone can find a picture online. Jim

So it is a beauty. I have a man friend in Montour N.Y, that wrote a book on old earthen ware. But the book is still in N.Y. I think you will find out more. I could see the two holes straight across from each other. I also think the third one may be on the right at a strange angle to the two. No doubt they had something to do with holding a cover, which could be made of wood. I have a book to get out that may help us - later, because I have to go get a needle put in my eye for Macular Deterioration - (Old age dicintigration!!! RED M.
