digging questions

what do you use as a probe before you start diggin? I have woods not to far from my house that has a mid 1800s early 1900s dump maybe about 5 feet downtheres also two more spots in there somewere from the 50s and 60s. found a bucket full of old modern bottles wile i was just walking around.

Check out this site, privyprobe.com. Or use something similar. If the dump is not too big, dig the whole thing ! Do it while your still young ! lol Seriously, then are even some good bottle after 1900. Don't be afraid to get dirty. Keep anything embossed or unusual until you find out what you have. If it is a dump, dig test pits to look for sign....ash, glass fragments, shells. Follow the shards to the whole bottles!
