Hi all, I just recently got back into bottle collecting and I am still trying to get a handle on what different types of pontil scars look like. I came across the bottle pictured in this post and was wondering if this is a pontil mark or perhaps a strange manufacturing defect. It doesn't look like an open pontil but perhaps a sand pontil that touched the edge of a gather rod. It is slightly rough in the center of the bottle but it doesn't appear to contain bits of sand like I would expect to see on a sand pontil bottle. I'm interested to hear what everyone has to say about it. The bottle is marked NEW YORK on one side and Dr. J. Briggs & Co on the opposite. It has an applied top and appears to have been formed in a post mold or key mold. It has strong whittle marks over the bottle, which was one of the things that first attracted me to it. Of course everyone wants to know what their bottle is worth so to spare you all I won't even ask. I will say I bought it in an antique store and I paid 12 dollars. Was it worth it or did I get ripped off?

To me it looks like there were slivers of glass from a previous bottle that come out on this one. It's interesting for sure.

Maybe there was glass from another bottle still stuck on the rod but not completely hardened? I don't know how these bottles were made exactly, sure is an earlier med to have no embossing.

I would say post mold and there was glass in the mold or maybe it was set on a marver table with some cullet on it, and it stuck to the bottom of the bottle. and as it is embossed with a city name and a doctor, 12 bucks is probably not too much to pay, plus if ya likes it, who cares if you paid a little too much........Andy

Thanks for the input guys! Now that you all pointed out that it's just extra glass stuck on the bottom it makes more sense. I thought it looked a little strange to me and I thought I would chance that it was a pontil.
