On Wednesday of last week my dad and I went up to an old stop for miners. They used Magnus as a pit stop to cross Walker Lake or as a place to rest. We get out their on our atv's and go to the town. Nothing there that wasn't broken or destroyed, so we walked across the railroad and found a lot of 1930's spikes and some 1890's. Then we go up into a canyon that had no road and anyone hasn't been there for a while. We go up and about a mile up into their we found something sticking out of the road and it was some old .45 mm shells (tank or aircraft). Then we keep going and another mile into it we found a house that collapsed on itself it dates around 1900. We walked around found no bottles, but we did find 2 California blast caps. There were two mines up there we only had time to go up to one as we only had about 45 minutes of light and we were up in the middle of the hills in the middle of nowhere. I went up to the mine and it went if vertically and about 3/4 of it was covered by rocks. I did find a shovel I left up there marked with a patent 2 on it, should I have kept it? I also wanted to know what you guys would do if you found that mine? Would you go explore it or leave it? I'll have pictures tomorrow or Thursday.

I wouldn't go very far into an old abandoned mineshaft, as they are extremely unsafe and if you are way in and your light stops working, you are basically screwed......

I'd go exploring, with a good strong walking stick to poke at possible loose rock in the ceiling of the tunnel. Granted, I've always liked going inside tunnels and caves so I am biased in favor of taking the risk. I like using the elastic band head-mounted lights, and would carry multiple plus extra batteries. Once I went far up a tunnel using just my cell phone flashlight, then it stopped working. Took forever to get back out.

I'd go in. 1. Bring a partner.2. Let others know exactly where you are and when you expect to return.3. As Plumbata suggests, plus granola, several bottles of water, a small medical kit.4. Don't do anything stupid, including yelling and jumping around or walking over wood (which could be rotted out and fall down a goodly distance because, secretly, it was covering something up.)5. Bring a 20-foot rope if you can. 6. Bring a screwdriver with Philips and flat head. Also a thumb wrench. And thus is why you need two people: Supplies are a bit bulky. Check Menards if you have one. They seem to have nice prices, usually.

Some do the older ones from the 1930's-40's the smaller ones are from the original Carson Colorado railroad, from the 1890's. The older ones don't have any markings.
