Nice find! An early wine bottle, perhaps. A dive find from the Caribbean?

The word is "pontil," referring to the iron rod (or blow-pipe employed as a pontil rod) stuck to the bottom of a bottle temporarily during the finishing process.
"To empontil" is the transitive verb.
"Pontilled" is a common abbreviation for "pontil-scarred".
