Hi Guys. I am stuck again. I actually have several bottles I need help identifying. Also, is there any way of knowing if a bottle is with looking up? I have 52 plus boxes left to go through and many have no markings. Should I try and identify each? Just your opinions would be nice.
I'm looking for information about what this may have been, age and if it's got any value.
Thanks

This is a pontil and it means its an real antique bottle, however has nothing embossed. Unfortunately the flat surface subtract its value.
It´s an interesting one for me.

The ability to identify a bottle and be relatively sure of it's original contents takes time to acquire. It also takes a lot of conversation with knowledgeable fellow collectors and also some common sense. It's like going to school, one starts in kindergarten and progresses as far as THEY choose. Another "need to know" is that with regard to unembossed bottles or "slicks" is that there are few ABSOLUTES. I began to really study bottles in 1964 and I'm still learning.

My approach to this type of bottles is it's an educated guess and I don't get too hung up on it. The tubular pontil dates it to 1860 or before, the small opening indicates a liquid and the size and shape indicate cosmetic / perfume or food related. That's as far as I need go.

For your research, this little bottle is called a "vial."

As for the rest of your bottles, why don't you photograph them three or four at a time, post the images here, and readers will identify those that have some collector interest. Make good, close-up images of the small group of bottles.

Thanks Guys I will probably open a thread to post the other bottles. I am learning so much about bottles and something that started as a chore after my Grandma's death has not turned into something that I am really fascinated with and have been able to identify a few antique bottles at an estate auction... something I would have had no clue about before.
Thanks for all your help and input.

Yeah anything old enough to have a pontil will have at least some value purely based on age alone. Probably not more than $10 or so, but it's definitely worth something.

the style reminds me generally of a Dalby's Carminative, without embossing. it was a fairly standard medicine shape. Google it and you'll see what I mean. So I'd say this is probably a med rather than a perfume.
