Alcohol lamps were/are widely used in lace-making (for singing thread ends, I think). Alcohol fuel is not explosive. Here's the glass body of one I acquired in a collection. A complete lamp would have a metal neck with a wick, and would rest on a metal base like an egg-cup. The lamp body could be tipped at any convenient angle.
