weird glass jar

This is a weird glass jar i found that has a built in glass tube in the center. it says on the base "PAT. U.S. AND ENGLAND. SEPT. 5. 1899
MAY. 23. 1899 CANADA 534" any information would be appreciated!

I did some research and it seems this is probably a paste jar. The missing lid lid probably had a hole in the center where the brush would sit in that middle tube. Interesting find!

It is a paste jar and I believe the brush was actually attached to the lid.

Sanford's made a "Utopian Jar" for their library paste... looks very much like the same basic design, with the center well for the brush.
