Dug this a few weeks ago in a 1880's trash pit but have no idea what it could be. Any ideas? It took some time to make...the underside is polished flat and the two slots were cut into it and the edges polished.
Bubba's Dad is, IMHO, on the right track if not spot on. It is designed for bowls where you want to leave the spoon in, jams, jelly, sugar, etc. It is considered nasty to use a personal utensil for such public items, in "Nice" company.

Definitely could be! I've seen those (usually with only one slot) but this one was so plain and the underside polished so flat I wondered if it was for some sort of laboratory glassware or something like that.
