Well, I decided to take up another hobby. As you can probably tell by the picture my new hobby is metal detecting. I just got her today. She's a minelab x-terra 30. I made it out for an hour and found some clad but nothing old. I was very surprised how easy it is to use. Any other detectorists (is that a word?) out there?

Hey Bryan, I have been detecting since 1982. Congrats on your new machine! I have had many models in the last 24 years (including a Minelab Explorer) It is a great hobby and it can help you find bottles as well. It is how I got into this great hobby of bottle digging/collecting! Keep at it, Kelley

Hey Kelley, you've been detecting quite some time then eh? Ever find anything interesting? I'm gonna have to cruise around town and look for some spots to hunt. There aren't any that come to mind right now. Do you think a playground would be a spot that would produce some goodies?

Oh yes! I have a Garrett's - GTI 1500. I have found loads of pennies, a pocket watch, butter knife, token, railroad rail & spikes from Logging Railroad from between 1898-1902 (there is supposed to be an actual train sunk somewhere out back-in the swamp-supposedly sunk after it was parked in the spring, before they got back to it again in the winter) ....that would be something to find! [:)] Hope you find something really good! [;)]

I just bought a RS discovery2000 at a yard sale. I have no idea how to use it... yet. I just figured $10, what the heck. I did some wooded areas with it and found what I expected from where I was looking (barbed wire at the edge of an old road). At least I know it finds that 5 inches underground. I did loose a penny in the grass though. Not very good at pinpointing, I got a lot of beeps but couldn't find the penny. I guess it cost $10.01. I'm going for a sandy area to try it next.

I've got a Whites XLT, would like to get one of those underwater ones. Found a few things, a little silver, canning tokens, toys, etc. My oldest daughter and I found a Roy Rodgers deputy sheriff badge (had to 'splain to her who that was *sigh*) and my eight year old found a hand forged set of fire place tongs, so you never know what you might find. Western and Eastern treasures is a great mag for detectorists and occasionally has old bottles in the articles. Lots of bottle hunters use em to help find dumps. My best metal find was not with my detector though but diggin for bottles super bowl sunday in 05 I found an model 1851 Civil war Officer's sword belt plate in great condition. I like hunting for bottles more, but it's a great diversion, wish I had the time to do it more. I dream of finding a beautiful colored rare jar full of coins!
