Hi, all. Just today I found this bottle in a stream in central Connecticut. While I was unable to find any info on the American Club Beverage Co., I did find some info about the bottle manufacturer. It's from Glenshaw Glass Co. and was made in 1948. I already posted this in another section of the forum, but Sodabob thought you all would enjoy it. It's my first bottle find (I was out hunting arrowheads), and I'm pretty excited and wanted to share. Thanks for looking! Now I just need to figure out how to clean it!

As for cleaning it, fill and submerge it in "Distilled White Vinegar" for 24 hours and then scrub it with a Scotch Brite type sponge using the green scrubby side. It won't scratch the glass. I have used this process numerous times on rusty bottles and it works great.

Here's a RC (Royal Crown) soda bottle I cleaned several years ago using the Distilled White Vinegar and Scrubby Sponge process ...

Interesting. I think I did see that company, but didn't investigate further because it was located in Rochester. Could it be the same company even though my bottle lists Hartford?

Excellent, thanks for the cleaning tip, Bob. Your cleaning of the RC bottle looks amazing. How did you clean the inside of it?

Careful with the Scotch Brite pad it will scratch the glass.
I use a Mister Clean sponge.
Vinegar works well on the rust. a longer soak maybe in order to get off the heavier rust.

Yeah, I used to use Scotch Brite on almost all of my bottles before I realized it could scratch. It took me a while to notice the scratches, because they are not obvious unless you hold the bottle in the right light. Sure enough, there were micro-scratches in the areas where I used it. I even tested it on a virgin bottle, just to confirm the scratches weren't already there before.

A dull Scotch Brite pad with very light pressure should be fairly safe. I only use it when other methods fail.

Have you guys used the "non-scratch" Scotch Brite pads? I haven't noticed any scratching with it.

I've never had any problems with scratches on plain glass, but would be careful with ACLs. I guess you'll have to do some experimenting and determine what works best for you. Regarding cleaning the inside, I attach a small piece of scrub sponge to the tip of a tempered steel rod and clean as needed. I tried a wire clothes hanger but it was too flimsy. I got my tempered steel rod at Home Depot. The attached pics illustrate the process I use, but you can lay the bottle in a flat container as well using a Tupperware-like container. I save the vinegar when done as it seems to retain its acidity for some time.

When a bottle, like this RC, is taller than the pitcher I use, I place a paper towel over the top and it continually wicks the vinegar around the lip.

And here is a sampling of the 'tools' I use
