No marks on the outside but A.G.W 4 on the base. We just dug this up in a walled garden that was owned for a time by Benjamin Disraeli who was the UK Prime Minister in the 1870s and had a working pineapple pit, now sadly gone

Any information would be appreciated - from this forum I understand the American Glass Works stamp but how it wound up here is a mystery

Hi, American Glass Works did not have full stops in their logo, however, both the Arsenal Glass Works and the Alloa Glass Works did.
The Arsenal Glass Works were in operation between 1865 and 1869 and the Alloa Glass Works
which had been established in Scotland in1750 apparently used the mark at sometime between 1900 and 1955.

Based on the style of bottle and the fact that it has an external screw cap points to it being a fairly modern piece.
If it has been found in the UK then that would suggest it is an Alloa product and dating to towards
the latter end of this time scale during which they used the A.G.W. mark.

The Alloa Glass Works Co. was acquired by United Glass Bottles Manufacturers in 1955.

For interest the following short Youtube video is of the Alloa Glass Works in 1950.

Hope this helps
