    Old Ink Well (bottle)

I recently found this in an antique (junk store) and thought it was unusual; looked on the web and couldn't find anything about it.

It made by Sanford Mfg Co with a '5' above it, with "Patn Apld For" on the base. Lots of bubbles and is a mold.

Anything information about would be helpful,

    Thanks,

Nice ink, with the pen rest. Wonder what the circular depression would be for?

That is unusual. I'm wondering if the circular depression is a result of being too close to a fire rather than part of the original design.

It must be part of the mold, because I found a few more with the same feature. A spot to keep a little blotting sand, maybe? Sounds a little messy, but that's all that I've been able to think of so far.

Maybe some sort of little blotter for the tip of the nib? With patent applied for and being pre-abm, it's pre 1900. probably 1890s. Neat little ink. A lot of these sorts of forms were sold as Patent Ink Stands. It would be cool to see what the label would have called it.
