Wow,
If anyone out there in the midwest wants to dig in Iowa this spring, let me know. I will post some shots tomorrow on some sites of mine. Iowa's population back in 1890 was 1,624,620. Ok, compare that to California (864,686), Florida (267,351), Wisconsin (1,315,480). Iowa in 1890 was the 8th largest state in population in the whole United States! ( Iowa joined the union in 1846, and we were a U.S. territory for several years prior) . What I am getting at is more population, more bottles! Plus the fact that there are hardly many diggers out here, and not much development covering the sites up. I have been digging alone since I was a kid. Mainly in a huge dump that was circa 1890-1910. I haven't been digging much the last few years, but I want to get back in full swing this spring thaw. I went back to my old dump site, it is all still there, and much to still be uncovered. So, if someone wants to help me plan a "group dig" this spring I am open for suggestions. I am willing to "share the wealth" just to meet some fellow bottle-nuts like me. Think about it....I see so much mention about digging, and Iowa is never mentioned. I have so many areas to uncover and no help. Not many people here have any interest in digging, but this state is a gold mine. History and the numbers do not lie. Higher population early on means more dumps and bottles! Think about it!!!!

I did some driving around close to my home in Eastern Iowa today. I went out to that 1890-1910 dump site. There is lots of snow on the ground, but you can see the old porcelain pots and kettles poking through the snow. Under the fallen trees you can see bottles and debris shaded from the snow. I did find a bottle there today partially exposed under a tree. I froze half of my face, but I got it out. I have photos of it too. "Winstead's Lax-Fos". Neat bottle, not machine made, lots of bubbles in the glass. I took some close up shots of the dump and also from a distance. Several areas in the woods where they dumped, which covers a large area overall. I dug there lots when I was younger, and from the size of the area, lots more to dig out. I also shot some photos of some abandonded farmhouses around the area, which all had privys and dumps I'm sure. Great places to dig at in the spring. Check out the shots for yourself!
