This just came out of the attic of a mid 1800's era house. It's stoneware 12 sided appx Qt Size and I think made by Merrill Pottery In Akron Oh. I have one almost like it I picked up several years ago it is a Diehl & Lord from Nashville Tenn. This only has the three stamped in letters (I put a little flour in the stamping for pic) I am sure the middle one is a "x" but the other 2 not sure. Maybe the first is a "I " or "C" and the last maybe a "O" I don't know if there is an ID guide on these or not but I haven't seen one. I believe these date from around the 1860's or so. Any help ? Thanks

I agree with the Merrill Pottery of Akron. Some of the bottles have a stamp, but the characteristics of the 12 sides, the molded top and the swirled base are consistent with the pottery bottles with the stamp. If the bottle was found in an attic, I would assume the place to start would be locally where the bottle was found. If you have access to Ancestry.com, they have city directories and census records. The inital X is the key, probably Xavier. "I" could be Ignatius. Good luck with the hunt. Scott

See, I just assumed I.X.L. actually meant "I excel," and would have had nothing to do with the name of the maker or vendor. I didn't even think about it being an actual person. The Dr Henley's Wild Grape Root Bitters bottle also has it on there. There is also this: "sold severalmedicines including an I.X.L. Sarsaparilla with R. Cotter andHouston, Tex. embossed. One of the two known is in my collection" from which indicates R. Cotter used it as a brand name.
