A few years back I befriended a local while digging in a river. He told me he had a large dump on his property, and said I was welcome to dig there. I toiled for about three days and came away with only two keepers, a soda and a citron BIM Hires Extracts. Despite the slim pickings, I re-visited the spot and was rewarded!
Most of the bottles are from the 1910-20s period, but there are pontil pieces mixed in. It ranges from 1-2 feet deep, so I believe it was bulldozed flat and burned at one time (there's a lot of melted bottles). Yet amidst all of those dismal signs and broken local sodas, I hit a pocket of unbroken sodas!
I returned the next day with a friend and we had some good finds. We got teased with a broken 1915 Coca-Cola from New London, Ct. And, it looks like the best part is yet to come!
Some of the finds. They included:
3 J.H. Blackler Westerly with embossed flag
J.H. Blackler Westerly w. block B monogram
3 Black Rock J.H. Blackler
Havens Bottling Works Westerly
New England Bottling Co. Westerly
Nu-Grape Westerly
Cliquot Club
Enoch W. Vars Pharmacist Niantic,RI
The Perry Pharmacy H.E. Jones Prop. Natick, Mass.
Marvelous Cold Cream jar
Turner Center Creamery bowling pin milk
The crier was the New England Bottling Co. Most are ABM, this one is BIM and has a backwards C in the CH monogram.
