Cool article, I know how it feels, sometimes when digging I feel kinda of sketchy about it. I mean the places I dig are public, out of the way, and there's no signs saying keep out. But still, I always feel at most spots someone is going to say " You can't be here!" or "what are you doing down here."
I try to leave spots clean a least when I finish a spot, things may get a bit filthy when I'm still digging it, I see no sense in burying all the garbage until I'm certain there's no more to be found at that hole Than I cover it up. and all I can say if someone tells me to leave is, "I'm sorry Sir/Mam/Officer won't happen again."
