Either a "16" or "91" on bottom. Something else too possibly, very faint.
Any idea?

Pickles or sauerkraut were the likely contents; probably sealed with a pressed-on metal cap. If there's a recessed ledge inside the lip, then it was a different type of closure.

Though it does not appear very old, it reflects an old style "barrel mustard" design. I get the impression that it is larger than those were; but I have no measurements from you to help with pinning that down.

I could see these being used for pickles and sauerkraut.

I have a little screw-cap jar that looks almost identical to that. Mine is 3.5 inches tall. Its metal top has a slot for coins and the top says Prepared Battleship Mustard. Apparently a small mustard jar that could be used as a little bank when empty.

I'm thinking yours is newer and either had a plastic snap-on cap, or maybe a rubber gasket, glass top, and metal clips like a Weck jar.

my first thought was pickle jar, but that type lip looks like that type that was on jelly jars where the lid pried off and you could use them for drinking glasses.
