I found these pieces of ?stoneware? that I suppose may have been an old 5 gal. bucket or something?

They were partially embedded in the soil and partly exposed. I'm going to head back at some point with a rake to try to find the rest of it.

Any ideas?

Hey X. I am just throwing my 2 cents - I am not an expert. The elephant ears seem like an older style BUT the glazing doesn't look right to me (for early salt-glaze) and the printed 5 looks newer to me than those early cobalt (or debossed) examples. My guess is 1920s-40s. I'm probably wrong.

Just about everything else I've found (that wasn't obvious party trash) was from the 20s - 40s (at least I think so). But I've never found anything like this so I figured I'd ask here =)

I know that there is older stuff to be found, but it's such a big area to cover and most of it is heavily wooded.

That is part of a 5 gallon crock. They came with a stoneware lid and were often used for home canning of sour kraut or vegetables, sometimes for hog lard or other food products that needed a large storage container.
It is difficult to date a dump by the stoneware because it was not thrown away until it broke, which could be many years after it was made.
