Blackglass Bottle

Picked up this old black glass bottle awhile back. I've seen a number of these bottles in the past but never with a lip like this one. I'm guessing age to be around 1790s to 1830s. Was wondering if anyone else has seen this style and if it is English.

Good-looking bottle! After reviewing Roger Dumbrell's illustrations, I'd guess about 1815-1820 for your bottle. I assume that it is dip-mold blown, right?

Well, without a dated seal on the bottle, we have to use dates of similar bottles that do have dated seals. The best matches in Dumbrell's UNDERSTANDING ANTIQUE WINE BOTTLES have 1815-20 dates. Check the line-drawings on pp. 92-93.

Actually, it does look like it's dip-mold blown. The other possibility is that is 3-mold blown, and we just can't see the vertical seam. After all, a 3-piece mold is just a dip-mold with shoulders.

It's not as early as 1790-1800 because in that timeframe the neck still had a distinct, separate string rim not greatly outsized by the neck top. Both the neck top and string rim were deflexed.

Later, the string rim became de-emphasized. The neck top increased in flare and served as the string rim. This is the case with JustGlass' bottle.
