This is a string of pretty rare threadless CD700 insulators that were used mostly on the West Coast, hence the nickname "California Eggs". They date from the late 1850s to 1860s and come in various colors. You can see by the photo that the gatherer, person who scoops the glass, was not very consistent. The shorter ones basically had less glass than the taller ones. In the days of child labor, not a whole lot was expected.
The big pile has been gathered by a collector who will actually place each insulator in this pile with the skirt facing down so they do not hold water. He has been building this pile for many years. It is an amazing thing to see in person. Enjoy!
