Hi Everyone I got this champagne bottle from a consignment store for $3. It has what appears to have an uneven applied ring and sheared top. It has some nice stretch marks in the neck. On the bottom around the inside of the push up it has some light rough spots. My questions are: Is this a sheared lip bottle and do the rough spots mean it's a pontil? I also would like to know if anyone could give me an approximate age for this bottle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Anthony

Nice one. That is definitely an applied lip. That looks like a pontil to me, tubular I think is what it's called. As for age, mind you this is just a guess. 1780 to 1830. There are more experienced guys on here that will way in sooner or later. I have a similar bottle and that's the age the guys on here came up with. How tall is it ? Good find here's mine, wax sealed with contents.

Thanks for the reply Goodman. It's 12 inches tall. How tall is the one that you posted? Anthony

It's hard for me to tell from pictures. I've seen champagnes with tax stamps still on them that looked very similar. The stamps were from the 1930's but the bottles had the crude applied string. I'd need to see it in hand.

its definitely pontiled, but id say its closer to 1850. if i owned it and was showing it off, id call it 1830-1850, or possible as late as 1860. either way, nice buy for $3! they are nice looking bottles for sure

Thanks for the replies and information. They've been a big help for me. If this bottle does fall into the 1830-1860 range does that mean it was free blown? It doesn't have any mold seams but because I thought this bottle was made later (1870s or 1880s) I assumed that was because it was a turn mold. Anthony

I agree with antlerman. I have some very similar and came from 1850's pits. Mine and I believe yours are free blown. The turn molds will always leave tell-tale, somewhat uniform concentric rings from being turned, though sometimes very hard to see. Jack
