I saw that also Eric. From the photo I can't tell if that's a pontil scar or a mamelon.

HA! Hallucinating, now we're talking MY language! I have some sodas with improved pontils with that same bump on base. I have yet to see an air vent that large or in the center of a kick-up, but then there is always a first........still think it is right as rain at 1850, even without handling it, but that would help. I agree with antlerman. I have some very similar and came from 1850's pits. Mine and I believe yours are free blown. The turn molds will always leave tell-tale, somewhat uniform concentric rings from being turned, though sometimes very hard to see. Jack
Free blown with a vent hole would be a first though. Wouldn't you agree?

I think you can say nipple here. Also an inverted dimple or a pimple might apply.[:D]

It's one of those terms surfaceone (how I miss him) threw at me on another website. Yes, Eric is correct on the definition Leon. It's a fancy term for nipple. On most of those kick-up bottoms, in the very center there's a nipple that extends outward. From the photo of this bottle I couldn't tell if there was a protrusion, but there is a perfectly symmetrical-looking ring in the very center of the photo. Not sure what that thingamajig is. Jack, have you been in the mushroom patch again? Lol.

Thanks for all the replies and help. As for the "vent bump", I have the bottle in hand and that area is smooth. I think it's a bubble in the glass. Whatever it is it sits on top of a conical bump. I don't know if this information helps at all.I've included a drawing which needless to say is not to scale. Please excuse my drawing skills I hope it helps. Anthony
