I am a bottle collector. But sometimes you find value in other treasures. I am a collector after all.

When bottles got scarce or too expensive to keep I would sell them to less fortunate collectors at bargain basement prices. I would often trade them for other interest items. I loved sports!

Ottawa had a football team and a junior hockey team. Not much else. I was envious of Montreal but proud of the fact that our family were founding members of what was once called Ville-Marie. A lot of Ottawa residents played for Montreal. My friend next door in South Ottawa had a famous uncle who played for the Canadiens. He sent her a Habs sweater but it was way too big on her so she gave it to me. I wore it as I played street and pick up games of ice hockey, but was never that fond of Montreal. I was a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, but getting a jersey in Ottawa or Manitoba was next to impossible. It was such a new team. I asked for one for Christmas in 1968. Mom gave a Boston jersey instead, that I gave to my twin. Sears Christmas catalogue at work?

My Grandpa loved the Montreal Canadiens. My Dad loved the Montreal Maroons. How could I explain my love for the Philadelphia Flyers? But like everything else in my life, a connection was made that stunned me.

I was at a garage sale. I found a Philadelphia Eagles pin in unusual colours. I still have it. It was deep blue and beige. Just to be sure it wasn't mistaken for another team, it had ribbons attached to it that were maroon and beige. I researched it and found out that it was from the late 1940s, made in the USA but NOT the team colours for the football team named the Philadelphia Eagles. Their colours were green and white.

Ottawa did have a hockey team when my Dad was just a kid but the depression killed it. Ottawa's last gasp was in St. Louis as the St. Louis Eagles. The jerseys had been repurposed out of a need for depression era economy. Their colours were dark blue, red and white. Ottawa had red, black and white jerseys back then. I guess dark blue would suffice. The sweaters were franchise property but disappeared. The last existing franchisee in the NHL was the Montreal Maroons. They died in 1938 and remained dormant until the war ended. Hockey started to pick up again by 1946.

Len Peto was part owner of both the Montreal Canadiens and the Montreal Maroons. He was from Philadelphia. In 1947 he petitioned the City of Brotherly Love to start a new NHL franchise with the last existing membership, the Montreal Maroons. They insisted on him building a new, bigger stadium first. He gave up and the franchise folded.

In 1967, the first new franchise since the depression was granted to Philadelphia. Someone's dream was still alive. Its first colours were deep red, black and white. Maroon?
