Does anyone know why this wood milk bottle crate was made without the bottom "slats" ?

All milk crates that I've seen with that type of construction have theirs. The wood appears to be in good condition. Soooo, I'll start the guessing by saying the slats were removed for some form of alternate usage... (No, not carrying kittens/puppies.):)

Just a guess but I imagine when the crates were stacked it would allow you to see if the crate was full or empty (from the side)

It was made that way originally. Talked to someone that delivered for them, he says that era box carried waxed cartons.
Saw some beer bottle wood crates that are similar. Could be to tell if full or empty.

I guess ventilation for some reason. The cold gets to the bottoms better? I saw this one with no wood in the bottom online.
