I was digging in Starke Florida(old city dump 1890's to 1956) about 2 years ago; ...and got huffed/grunted at by something, ..never saw it approach or leave, ..it had a low gutteral sound, creeped me out as bit, ..probably was a large buck or something, as there is often deer and turkeys running through the dump area as it is attached to a BIG piece of land. Here's a pic of the shallow trench I was digging at the time...

I was thinking the same thing Bram. I was spincasting in a small stream in a wooded area when I heard a low growl. Looked around and saw a boar about 200 yards away. He stood his ground as several sows and piglets fled through the woods. Deer usually give a more high pitched snort.

Those wild boar are scary animals and can be aggresive. Ain't trying to be funny about this ,but I think of old yeller when I think about wild hogs. VERY DANGEROUS!

I see bottles in that hole! I'd dig there in a heartbeat. Mostly wild animals will steer away from humans and you won't know that they are even there. Wild hogs will stay clear except if there are baby pigs in the group, then they become aggressive. I always carry my 22 pistol if I'm in an area that has wild hogs. I'd also check to see if anyone was also digging in the same spot.
