Is there a right/proper way to dig, as to keep the broken bottles to a minimum?
Or is it just slow and steady?

In general I'd say don't dig too forcefully if you're in an area where bottles are showing up. If you're getting a lot of bottles in one spot it may be best to switch to a hand tool to excavate that area.

Move your shovel in slowly. when I'm in a Privy near Bottom where all the good Bottles are I like to kinda lightly scrap across the top of the dirt instead just ramming the shovel in at full speed, once I hear the scrape of glass & see a speck of glass I'll switch to my hand rack, Preferably Plastic hand Rack & slowLy work around Bottle, I've rarely ever Broken a Bottle unless in super hard packed Clay, ect. Carefully... I even try to use a probe carefully. Drives my digging partners a bit crazy. One day they'll bust a great bottle and then they'll start doing it the UncleBruce way... carefully.
