I've never actually found a smile bottle in the wild yet although it was sold in parts of Canada , see its listed in my book and I've seen there bottles for sale before , it was popular back then I guess maybe not locally

I don't know what it was. I have seen some of these Smile bottles with their paper label describing it as containing flavoring/syrup. So, it makes me wonder - were they soda bottles or syrup bottles, or both, and if both, did it depend on their size?
Smile crowncap bottles come in several sizes; 1oz 2½oz, 6oz, 6½oz, 24oz, and 1 gallon. I don't know whether all of those sizes contained soda or syrup. It's possible the gallon size never contained any product.
