Wondering if the Baltimore people have found any of these? Embossed Dr I J MARTIN on front. Appears to be from around late 1870s to early 1880s.
I saw there was a doct in Ellicott City with that name.

I found this listing noting someone of that name died in 1900. Havent found much else.
Doesnt seem to be in the Baltimore book. Does the Balt bottle book cover Ellicott City?

Hello Matt,
I went to my favorite Federal Census to search for I.J. Martin and here's what I found...Isaac J.Martin was born in New Jersey in 1816...He and his wife Juliana and family.....including a son named Isaac J. Martin b. 1859 were listed in the Endicott City, Md census from 1850 through 1880 (named Endicott Mills in 1850)

In 1850 Isaac was listed as a "teacher' but each of the years following his occupation was "druggist" 1860 "chemist" in 1870 "physician and chemist" in 1880
I also found Isaac J. Martin in the list of deceased physicians .....b. 1859 and died in 1899
He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore in 1884

I haven't found a death date on the senior Martin and there is no census for 1890
Perhaps this info will help you date your bottle.
Regards,

Matt,

The Baltimore bottle book only covers Baltimore city and county. It would be nice to see a listing of all the bottles for the rest of Maryland put together.

yes it would. I dont think I have every met anyone that collected all of maryland. The sections of MD are culturally very different. You have Baltimore of course, the eastern shore and western MD are so different. I have considered trying to do a western MD guide but its doubt full especially because I have always purposely avoided milks. I will still probably end up do a smaller book on Frederick/Hagerstown bottles at some point.

thanks, sounds like its from Ellicott City. It was with some other Balto bottles.

How did Endicott City become Ellicott City? Never heard that one...

I found the Dr. Isaac J. Martin's Medical Company listed as a maryland corporation still in business in 1908.
This indicates they most likely produced a patent or proprietary remedy of some sort as opposed to it just being a doctor's prescription bottle. Just need to find one with a label now.
