dug a 60's brick liner.......

Well, been diggin' a few holes but little to show for the efforts. Not even any good cryers......until yesterday. Probed out a couple holes on a pre-civil war lot and found one brick liner and one likely stone liner. Opened up the brick one as it appeared only 2 foot square while probing. Went at least 5' so I figured it might be a short dig, judging by the small size. Wrong! It rather quickly opened up to about 3' square, not much bigger but that extra square foot made all the difference in the world, and it was still cramped! We got about 3" of rain a few days ago and so even the clay cap was pretty moist, making it like digging in thick snot! At about 5" started finding bottle glass and pulled out a 60's looking slick extract. About 6" deeper popped up a flaired lip pontiled puff. THAT got my attention. Dropped into & under the lime layer and the last 3 feet of this 8 footer was use layer with little whole, of course. Story of this dig season for me. Got about the 6 1/2 foot level in one corner when I uncover a crude Schnapps in about 8 pieces. Never dug one before, whole or otherwise so I kept the pieces for a glue job. Right under and next to it was a broken cobalt panel I first thought was a Heimstreet. Pulled out the rest of the bottle and then thought it was a Wishart's Pine Tree, but the color was not right. Wiping away the dirt I could make out "London", then "Royal" and finally "Imperial Gin"!!! I was unfamiliar with this one but had a slightly familiar ring to it, so I looked it up in the auctions. It would have made my season a memorable one for sure! I had mentioned on my video I made during the dig about having "hope" where there is one there could be two (my standard line for encountering cryers) Well, there were no more of them but the bottle goddess does have a wicked sense of humor. Only whole bottle was a early crude Hope's//Flavoring/Extracts//New York. HAHA! Will likely open up the stone liner tomorrow and continue to "hold onto hope!"

Here are some pics of the finds, early finds on the tailgate, the horde and the glue jobs (after the glue.) Only other real crier was a Crowleytown Mason. Hope the stone liner is as old as this one with some unbroken good ones! Dug a handful of what I used to think were salve jars but after digging a couple holes with over 100 in each hole I have concluded they were some addictive substance. Where you find one you usually find a dozen or more.......like cockroaches! Jack

Very nice finds! Are you still looking for a digging partner? Just got done doing a little digging with WestKYdigger over the weekend, most everything we pulled was from the 1920s.

That was a killer pit no matter how you look at it! Those criers would have made my year! I dug my first privies over the weekend and I am definitely hooked for life! I need to dig!
